VESPERÆ RESURRECTIONIS AD 1625
Workshop participants, under the direction of Dr. Bartosz Izbicki, will prepare chants for the program “Vesperae Resurrectionis AD 1625 – Jesuit Music from the Counter-Reformation Era in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.” Participants will study all the elements of the Vespers liturgy, following Jesuit liturgical practices of the Counter-Reformation period.
Psalms will be performed in falsobordone style, based on a recently discovered Jesuit manuscript by Katarzyna Spurgjasz, known as the Schwedler Codex (PL-Wu RM 5893) – one of the richest sources of its kind in Europe, containing 159 arrangements. The most solemn liturgical moments will include polyphonic works by composers such as Orazio Vecchi, Luca Marenzio, Felice Anerio, and Orlando di Lasso, with selections rooted in the chant tradition.
Latin liturgical chants will be interwoven with hymns in Lithuanian and Polish. Simpler polyphonic arrangements will be accompanied by an improvising instrumental ensemble consisting of harpsichord, theorbo, positiv organ, and virginal. These polyphonic masterpieces will gain a new dimension of interpretation through the vocal practices characteristic of traditional sacred singing, in which the ensemble Jerycho specializes.
The artistic vision for this reconstruction is shaped by Bartosz Izbicki – a musicologist, organist, and performer who has spent two decades researching the heritage of Polish liturgical chant. He is the founder and director of the ensemble Jerycho. Izbicki’s work consistently seeks to revive ancient Church music as a living cultural and spiritual practice, rather than a static academic artifact.
Registration can be found in the segment Festival Pass.
