SURGENS IHESUS
Workshop participants, led by Maxime Docteur, will prepare chants for the program “SURGENS IHESUS – The Great Easter Responsories from 10th-century St. Gallen manuscripts.”
These are introductory workshops in Gregorian chant. Maxime Docteur is a student of Damien Poisblaud and continues in his work the understanding of Gregorian chant developed by his teacher. The main aspects through which this heritage will be explored are: the neumatic notation of the St. Gallen manuscripts, modality, and Pythagorean and just intonation. This approach seeks to understand monodic church chant as a unified sonic process in which melody, rhythm, text, and voice are inseparably connected.
Attention will also be given to the relationship between neumatic notation and vocal gesture: early sources show that Gregorian chant required highly refined and subtle vocal control—how the chant sounds, moves, and is shaped by the voice.
Another important question, often overlooked in the study of early monodic music, is tuning—what was it like? The workshops will introduce a modal concept of tuning, in which not only the accuracy of intervals is important, but also their relationships and the quality of the sound.
All of this will be revealed through the rich repertoire of the Easter season—responsories from the liturgy of the hours.
